SRINAGAR, Feb 25: Army last night foiled a militant bid to target the security forces vehicles in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district by defusing an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) last night, a Defence official said today.
The Defence official said after a tip off about an IED in Khwajabagh Petrol Pump area was received, a joint team of 46 Rashtriya Rifles and police was launched with explosive detection dog team and Bomb Disposal Squads late Wednesday night.
“The search continued for about four hours till the IED was found behind a passenger shed at the bus stand past midnight. The IED was then extricated from the site by joint Bomb Disposal teams of Army and police, thus saving valuable lives and averting any mishap within a heavily populated area. The area around was thereafter searched and sanitized and made safe for passage of civil vehicles and Army convoys,” he said.
The Defence official said the IED was reported to be weighing approximately 15 kilograms cylindrical in shape and had an electrical detonation mechanism. “With this operation, security forces in Baramulla thwarted another attempt by anti-national elements to target civilians and military vehicles thus maintaining peace in Baramulla town,” he said.
