Arbitrator seeks KoPT’s view on taking over HBT’s assets

KOLKATA, Apr 3:  The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) is evaluating a proposal as part of arbitration for the equipment of Haldia Bulk Terminal (HBT) lying at Haldia Dock Complex since the cargo handler moved out in November 2012, alleging law and order problems.
KoPT sources told PTI that a proposal had been received as part of arbitration for the taking over of mechanised cargo equipment of HBT.
“Mecon had valued the entire equipment of HBT at Rs 80.3 crore and KoPT has to indicate by April 21 whether it is keen on taking over,” sources said.
HBT, a joint venture between ABG Infralogistics and French Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, had a 10-year contract for cargo handling operations at berth number 2 and 8 at the Haldia Dock Complex.
HBT had claimed investing Rs 140 crore in mechanised equipment, including six cranes, 50 dumpers, 26 loaders and waybridges.
KoPT had approached the court seeking demurrages for terminating contract and causing financial loss, while HBT sought permission to evacuate its equipment.
KoPT officials said it was yet to take a call on these assets.
In case KoPT declines to buy the assets, the arbitrator would have a right to dispose them off.
“The plan is to make use of the ideal equipment, but they will not have an impact on the damage claim by KoPT on HBT,” the sources added. (PTI)
