JAMMU, Feb 28: Apollo Hospital, Amritsar has launched ‘Novo’ technique for knee replacement surgeries.
The Novo technique is faster and better than conventional techniques. Conventional technique involves use of large number of surgical instruments for surgery, hence resulting in longer duration of surgery. In conventional technique surgeons were highly dependent on instruments for achieving precision, accuracy and perfect alignment. Novo technique on the other hand utilizes surgeons’ expertise, experience and skills with minimal use of instruments.
Dr Sumit Mahajan, Senior Consultant – Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy at Apollo Hospital, Amritsar said, “Novo technique for total knee replacement has been launched for first time in Amritsar. This new advanced technique mainly focuses on giving best possible results at very low cost in very less time to patients undergoing Total Knee replacement surgeries.
Dr Mahajan is first surgeon in Amritsar to do the knee preservation surgeries like rare cartilage transplant, key-hole knee surgery & partial knee replacement for which patients usually go out to get operated.
As compared to conventional technique, Novo technique reduces surgery time, blood loss during surgery, length of incision, muscle damage, post-operative pain, post-operative physiotherapy (rigorous physiotherapy for months is not required), duration of hospital stay, chances of infection and complication, physical and mental stress to the patients and family and cost of surgery.
Nirmal Devi, 67, who was operated using Novo technique at Apollo Hospital, Amritsar said “I travelled all the way from Uttar Pardesh to get surgery from Dr Sumit Mahajan at Apollo Amritsar. My knee surgery was conducted on 12th December and I was discharged on 17th December. I started walking within 8 hours after surgery and it was quick and painless. I never felt that I had undergone a surgery and recovered well. I had bent knees which have become straight now.”
