JAMMU, Nov 6: All J&K Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) has reiterated its appeal to Union Government to take immediate steps in providing security to its leaders in view of recent death threats given by the chairman of the United Jehad Council (UJC), Syed Sallah-ud-Din to its members.
In a letter to Union Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde here today chairman AJKPC Shafiq Mir and its general secretary, Anil Sharma warned that any delay in providing the security to leaders of Panchayat Conference will force them to succumb to the pressure of anti national elements.
The letter said the leaders of the conference can work for strengthening the roots of democracy in the State with more courage once they are provided security. It said any delay in this regard can prove fatal and disastrous for leaders as well as their families beside pose a grave threat to the survival of democracy in the State as no body will dare to come out for the strengthening of democratic system in the State.
The letter recalled that AJKPC leaders have become a direct target of the militants and anti national elements after the Association put a brave face and took a banner of revolt against the UJC and asked all the Panchs and Sarpanchs in the state not to succumb to the pressure and dictates of the militants. Due to the open revolt of the conference against the heads of all the militant organizations, the main leaders of the conference have become the first target of the militant organizations and there is every apprehension that they can be targeted at any time and at any occasion.
It said despite the repeated appeals, the State Government has not taken any step to save the lives of Panchayat members and their families in general and the leaders of AJKPC in particular. The Conference has already submitted a memorandum to DGP of the state in this regard yesterday but no steps were taken by him, so far, the letter added.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Delhi has pledged is full support to the elected Panchs and Sarpanchs in J&K and assured them that it will take up the issue with Central leadership.
Harasis Singh,the J&K State Unit president of SAD Delhi in a statement issued here today said that his organization shares the security concern of the Panchyat members of the state in the wake of recent open threat by UJC chairman, Syed Sallah-ud-Din and appreciates the brave stand taken by the Panchayat leaders of both the regions of the State.
