India and China held high-level talks at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point in Eastern Ladakh to resolve pending issues at the remaining friction points. The talks took place ahead of the Chinese Defence Minister’s visit to New Delhi for a Defence Ministerial Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The talks come after a gap of around four months since the last round of dialogue between the senior Army commanders of the two sides. The Eastern Ladakh border standoff began in May 2020, and both countries have been engaged in military and diplomatic talks to resolve the conflict. Following the 16th round of military talks, India and China implemented the agreement to disengage from Patrolling Point 15 in the Gogra-Hotsprings area in September of last year. India has consistently maintained that achieving peace and stability in the border regions is a prerequisite for normalising its relationship with China.
The ongoing border dispute between the two countries has been a longstanding issue and has resulted in several border conflicts, including the clashes in Galwan Valley in 2020. The dispute not only affects the security and sovereignty of the two nations but also has an impact on the economic and diplomatic ties between them. Resolving the border issue would lead to increased economic cooperation and trade between the two countries, which would be beneficial for the people and businesses of both nations. Furthermore, a resolution of the border issue would help to reduce tensions and build trust between India and China, which would be important for maintaining peace and stability in the region. India and China need to engage in meaningful dialogue and negotiations to find a mutually acceptable solution to the border dispute. Both sides should work towards finding a solution that is fair, just, and takes into account the interests of both countries. Both India and China have a lot to gain from a peaceful and stable relationship, and resolving the border dispute would be an important step towards achieving this goal.
