The cave’s history is shrouded in mystery and so many legends are afloat about who discovered it and when. Till date the story that has been carried as word of mouth is that a Gujjar or Bakarwal meaning herdsman in olden times discovered it while grazing his cattle in the nearby pastures. The Pandits of Kashmir were the first among the pilgrims who visited the cave for the Darshan of the Lingam on appointed days and nights. Owing to the disturbances caused by the militants in the Valley, the Government has made elaborate security arrangements for the safe pilgrimage of the yatris. We learn that adequate force and all necessary arrangements are afoot and the pilgrimage is made secure at every stage. The Government has taken proper steps to provide not only security but all other facilities to the pilgrims. India is a country whose people are tied to the traditions coming to them from olden days. People all over the country are very cooperative in providing assistance to the pilgrims and making their pilgrimage a success. Credit goes to a large number of officials, common people and workers who are lending full support and assistance to the pilgrims on visit to the holy cave of Amarnath. It is a matter of great satisfaction and the pilgrims should be thankful to the State Government for making elaborate arrangements of their security during pilgrimage.
There are two routes for reaching the cave; one is via Pahalgam and the other is via Baltal.
