Anna Hazare meets CEC for electoral reforms

NEW DELHI, Aug 3:Social activist Anna Hazare today met Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath here and discussed issues related to electoral reforms.
“I met the Election Commission on the issues of election reforms. There should be a button in the EVMs (electronic voting machines) so that the voters can refuse the contesting candidates,” Mr Hazare told reporters after the meeting.
He stressed that people should get right to reject.
Former Army chief V K Singh, who also accompanied Mr Hazare, said the anti-graft activist met the EC on three-four important issues.
“Anna Hazare raised the issue of tainted people contesting polls. Anna Hazare demanded special audit of political parties, their expenses,” Gen (retd) Singh said.
He said Mr Hazare also said there should be a proper structure for internal democracy and selection of candidates in the political parties.
“The EC said this issue does not come under their jurisdiction,” Gen Singh added.
On the suspension of Gautam Buddha Nagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Durga Shakti Nagpal by the Akhilesh Yadav Government, Mr Hazare said the action of the UP Government was ‘illegal’ and it acted in a ‘haste’.
“The Government should stand behind the honest officials. We all have to work together for this country,” the Gandhian said. (UNI)
