SRINAGAR, Oct 7: A shutdown was observed by traders of Main Town of Anantnag district in South Kashmir today amid violent clashes against alleged police excesses.
All the markets of Main Town of Anantnag were shut on the call of United Traders Association, an amalgam of local traders, against what they alleged police highhandedness. They alleged that several shopkeepers were detained by police yesterday during stone-pelting clashes while a senior police officer posted at Saddar police station also abused them.
The traders said that they will not end their protest till the officer is transferred from the area. During the shutdown, intense clashes between local youth and security forces erupted in parts of Anantnag Town during which police used teargas canisters. The situation remained tense in Anantnag Town throughout the day.
