Sir,
This refers to the news item ‘IISc makes Indian debut in top 100 world university ranking’ (DE,Nov13,2015).It is really a matter of pride for our country that Indian Institute of Science(IISc)Banglore has broken India’s poor ranking spell and made its entry at the 99th spot in the list of the world’s top 100 universities for engineering and technology, according to ‘Times Higher Education(THE) Ranking for Engineering and Technology’.The fact that the top three positions have gone to US institutions proves that the USA is far ahead of our country so far as the education in engineering and technology is concerned though ours is the second largest populated nation in the world. It is ,therefore, time to introspect as to what ails the higher education in India and what are the areas in which our universities and other institutions of higher learning are lagging behind such institutions in the advanced countries. We also need to lay more emphasis on providing infrastructure and encourage research work in our universities. There is also need to restructure and redesign the courses at college and university level in such a manner that they are in tune with the changing market demand and enhance the chance of employability of our graduates and postgraduates. Our universities and higher institutions of higher learning need to be provided liberal funds to encourage resesrch work in varoius spheres. These institutions also need to be given full autonomy so that they can work to achieve higher level of excellence.Though the government has implemented centrally sponsored schemes such as SSA,RMSA,RUSA with a view to provide quality education to the students, much more needs to be done to plug the loopholes in our education system to bring it at par with the best education systems at the global level. All the modern concepts alongwith the areas from our rich culture and heritage need to be incorporated in the new Education Policy for which the Union Education Ministry has started the exercise and invited suggestions and views from one and all.In our own state too, sincere efforts should be made to provide infrastrutural and other facilities in our universities at par with the top universities of the world and introduce market oriented and other innovative courses in order to make the students employable as they leave the universities.
Yours etc….
