Speaking to reporters, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Budgam Hariprasad K K said the accused has been identified as Mudasir Ahmad Mir, a resident of Galwanpora village.
He said the accused was arrested after investigators gathered multiple forms of evidence during the probe and later recovered material evidence on his disclosure.
The SSP said the body of the minor girl was found in Galwanpora at around 7:15 am on Sunday.
Following the recovery of the body, police converted the already registered kidnapping case into a murder investigation under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
He said Budgam Police immediately launched an extensive search and investigation in the area, during which investigators collected digital, serological and biological evidence from the crime scene and surrounding locations.
According to the officer, the evidence gathered during the investigation pointed towards the involvement of a local person in the crime.
Police subsequently questioned several suspects over the last 36 hours.
The SSP said one particular suspect came under scrutiny after his “demeanour and examination” corroborated most of the evidence collected by investigators.
“The accused was then confronted with the available evidence, following which he admitted his involvement in the commission of the crime,” the officer said.
“He has been formally arrested and, on his disclosure, we have also recovered material evidence,” the SSP said.
The officer, however, said the investigation was still at a preliminary stage and that police were continuing to probe the motive behind the crime and other related aspects.
