AKOLA, April 15 : A suspected heatwave-related death has been reported in Akola as the city recorded a scorching 44.2 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest location globally on Wednesday, according to the Meteorological Department.
Police said the body of an unidentified man was found inside a goods auto in the Agarves area on Wednesday afternoon.
On receiving information, Old City police reached the spot and conducted a panchnama before sending the body to the General Hospital for post-mortem. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the man had been seen moving around the locality in the morning, while his body was later discovered in the vehicle.
Police suspect no foul play and said the death was likely caused by heatstroke amid extreme temperatures.
Efforts are underway to establish the identity of the deceased.
Akola has been witnessing intense heat conditions, with temperatures consistently crossing 44 degrees Celsius since the second week of April.
Authorities have issued heatwave alerts and stepped up preparedness measures.
District Collector Varsha Meena has directed officials to enhance awareness and response systems.
Heatstroke wards have been set up and 137 beds have been reserved across government and rural hospitals.
Adequate stock of ORS for oral hydration and essential medicines has also been ensured, officials said. (UNI)
