NEW DELHI : Apex decision making body in the Defence Ministry today again deferred its decision regarding an ambitious proposal of the Indian Air Force to replace its fleet of 56 ageing
‘tactical airlift’ Avro aircraft with the help of Indian private Industry.
The Defence acquisition council, chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, did not give its go ahead to the project which is facing a single vendor situation. Defence sources said the minister wanted a ‘specialist briefing’ before he arrives at a suitable decision. In the last DAC meeting also, the matter was deferred to seek more clarity.
‘Request for Proposal’ for replacement of 56 Avro aircraft was issued by IAF on May 8 last year, soliciting responses from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with participation from only Indian private industry, keeping the government owned military aviation major HAL at bay.
