JAMMU, June 14: The chain hunger strike launched by AIIMS Coordination Committee, an amalgamation of various civil society groups spearheading agitation in support of setting up of an AIIMS in Jammu region, entered third day today.
The members of the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JCCI) today took their turn to sit on the strike.
“It is third consecutive day of the strike. People from various sections have sat on the strike in support of the AIIMS demand. We will continue till our demand is met. Today the members of CCI sat on the strike,” JCCI President Rakesh Gupta told reporters here today.
Rakesh Gupta, also lambasted the biased authorities in the State and at the Center for their hostile attitude towards the reasonable demands of the people of Jammu Province and warned them of serious consequences in case they continued to test the patience of the grossly ignored and politically neglected masses of Jammu region.
To press for their demand of the institute to be brought back to Jammu, the AIIMS Coordination Committee, supported by the members from other civil society groups, had started its indefinite dharna and chain hunger strike led by Abhinav Sharma, president of the J&K High Court Bar Association. Abhinav Sharma said the aggrieved people of Jammu Province on Saturday gave a befitting reply to Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed by rejecting his invitation for a meeting with civil society members of the region.
The Chairman said that the civil society meeting had been called by the Chief Minister to draw away the spirit and inspiration of the agitating people of Jammu Province. The people are politically too mature that no one can befool them, he added. Sharma further said that he is being approached by one and all offering his support for the cause the people of Jammu.
Accusing the Government of discriminating against the Jammu region, the AIIMS Coordination Committee has decided to continue with its chain hunger strike unless the Central and State Government make formal announcement of the return of AIIMS to Jammu.
