Sir,
Delighted to read the comprehensive compilation-Agriculture and employment in Ladakh by Stanzin Lakdan and Dr Lobzang Stanzen DE 16/01/2018.The authors being the sons of soil have explained the ground realities of the problems relating to the traditional fruit crop like Apricots and Sea buckthorn besides field crops like buckwheat, and watermelon. Useful data has been presented to justify the potential such agricultural crops have in present day agricultural market economy. Many central and state agencies that are presently engaged in improving the cropping packages and solving the challenges too stand discussed. Ladakh region having unique geographical location coupled with distinct agro-ecology in the country calls for intensive exploration of the untapped farm potential. Availability of huge cultivable land, sunshine, farm manpower and dedicated people can make this region a model of Agricultural prosperity and remove poverty in the region. Off-season production of vegetables including sweet watermelon for metro markets is sure to boost the farm returns.
Yours etc…..
