Agri land shrinking fast in food-deficit J&K: SDP

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Apr 19: Expressing serious concern over the shrinking of  Agriculture land fast in the food-deficit J&K State, Socialistic Democratic Party president, Dr Darakhshan Andrabi today said that there seems to be no will on the part of Government to bring legislation and stop the conversion of Agriculture land for commercial and other purposes.
Addressing a press conference here today, Dr Andrabi alleged that ‘land- misuse’ is being legalised by the Government while already vast stretch of Agriculture land and orchards are being converted into commercial hubs. This activity is also posing great threat to the environment and ecology of the State. The State is already mainly dependent on the food supplies from outside  and if this menace is not stopped its repercussion will be adverse on the society here. The land mafia is ruling the State and managing things in its favour using influence.
Dr Andrabi pointed out that unplanned development of cities and towns  and unchanged status change of land in rural areas has put our lives to a great risk and the Government is quite unconcerned. She alleged that ‘let-free’ and ‘get- free’  attitude of the Government is really cause of worry for the people living here. The SDP president expressed her concern over the fast shrinking agriculture in the State and slammed the ruling politicians and bureaucrats for declaring cultivable land as marsh and barren just to certify its use for construction purpose.
The SDP leader alleged that the defective housing and development plans of the State Government are responsible for this whole mess which is also proving hazardous for the ecology of our State. Those, who tire-lessly make big claims of putting the State on the path of development are in the real context putting us on the path of destruction and annihilation. The environment of this Himalayan region is surely leading us to the big catastrophe, she maintained.
SDP general secretary Ajay Kumar and senior leaders Kamaljit and Balwinder Singh also spoke on the occasion.
