Agencies will coordinate with each other to check illegal activities at Kolkata port: Suvendu

KOLKATA, Jun 4 : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday said central and state intelligence agencies, along with the CISF, Customs, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port authorities and Kolkata Police, will jointly monitor activities at the port to curb smuggling of drugs and other illegal items.

Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’, Adhikari alleged that illegal activities were being carried out at Kolkata Port under the leadership of some local councillors with the support of the erstwhile ruling government and due to a lack of coordination among police, port authorities and CISF.

“Illegal activities, syndicate operations and extortion were going on under the leadership of some councillors. We used to see reports of seizures of drugs and other illegal materials from ships. This happened mainly because Kolkata Police, CISF and port authorities were not working in coordination,” Adhikari said.

He further said the situation would now be addressed through institutional coordination.

Adhikari said it has been decided that representatives of the KMC, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Customs, CISF, Kolkata Police and intelligence agencies of the Centre and the state will now meet every month to review such issues. (PTI)
