AFSPA: Centre seeks modification of apex court order
NEW DELHI: The Centre today sought modification of a Supreme Court judgement in connection with the alleged extra judicial killings in encounters in North eastern states by the Armed forces.
After hearing the mentioning of the Attorney General (AG) Mukul Rohatgi, the three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Jagdish Singh Khehar, and also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, said,” We would hear the matter, as it was a sensitive and important issue.”
The AG, on behalf of the Union government filed a curative petition seeking modification of the earlier order of the apex court. Justice Madan B Lokur had pronounced the earlier order.
The Union of India sought to exempt the armed forces from an investigation by the police in those Armed Forces Special Powers Act areas or states where encounter deaths took place.
The apex court had, in its earlier judgement, said that the First Information Report (FIR) has to be registered by the police in any encounter killings in any state by the armed forces. (AGENCIES)
