UDHAMPUR, June 2: A massive public gathering was organized Dehma Rapper, tehsil Majalta, near here, today, where a large number of prominent workers from Majalta block, local residents, and representatives from various sections of society participated.
The gathering witnessed widespread public resentment against the deteriorating condition of the area, neglect of development works, and the indifferent attitude of the Government and administration.
Senior leaders and public representatives, including Pawan Khajuria, Akhil Prashar, Captain (retd) Gopal Singh, Bishan Dass, Balwant Raj, Babu Ram, Master Durga Dass, Keval Sharma, Feroz Din, besides ex Sarpanches addressed the gathering and strongly criticized the failures of the Government in redressing people’s problems.
The speakers stated that the Government had made tall claims regarding the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), but the ground reality is entirely different. The slogan of “Har Ghar Jal” still remains confined to paper in most villages. Despite the expenditure of crores of rupees, several pipeline projects remain incomplete, and even in areas where work has reportedly been completed, residents continue to face irregular water supply. The public now seeks accountability for the funds spent under this scheme, they added.
People warned that if the pending works are not completed soon, a large-scale public agitation will be launched.
Serious concern was also expressed over the deplorable condition of rural link roads. On the occasion, Pawan Khajuria stated that most of the roads damaged during last year’s rains continue to remain in a miserable condition. Due to the apathy of the administration and public representatives, villagers are facing daily hardships.
He said with the rainy season approaching, the responsible authorities continue to remain indifferent to the public’s suffering.
The gathering also expressed strong resentment over rising unemployment among the youth. Speakers said that educated youth are being forced to struggle for employment opportunities. While the Government continues to make promises regarding jobs, no substantial opportunities are visible on the ground. The situation has become so alarming that youth from almost every village are compelled to migrate in search of employment. This, they said, is clear evidence of the failure of the Government’s policies.
The speakers also questioned the functioning of the elected representatives also.
Concern was also expressed over the poor condition of basic amenities, including electricity, drinking water, roads, healthcare, education, and other essential services. The speakers clearly stated that if the Government and administration fail to take the people’s issues seriously, people will be compelled to take to the streets to fight for their rights, and the administration and Government will bear full responsibility for any such situation.
