Administrative units row: Protest, shutdown in Narbal

SRINAGAR, Jan 29:  A massive protest demonstration and shutdown was observed in Narbal and its adjoining areas of Central Kashmir demanding Tehsil status.
Reports said that men and women this morning took to the streets at Narbal Chowk and blocked the Srinagar-Gulmarg road for at least four hours. The protestors holding banners and placards shouted slogans in favour of Tehsil status to Narbal.
Today’s protest was held the under banner of Co-ordination Committee Narbal and its adjoining areas. The president of the Committee Aftab Ahmad Qureshi told Excelsior that they are forced to take to the streets as the Government has miserably failed to upgrade the Narbal block to Tehsil, which was established in 1953, the oldest in Central Kashmir,” he said.
The general secretary of the Coordination Committee, Syed Zahoor Ahmad said that apart from meeting with the committee members they also met then Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and other officials of the State administration to inform them about the callous attitude of successive Governments towards the Narbal block.
The protestors also threatened to intensify the agitation if Government did not meet their demand; they will start an agitation and will come on roads on daily basis.
However, after the assurance of divisional administration, they allowed the traffic to ply from the areas after remained suspended for several hours.
