Additional SRTC buses

Sir,
Refer to the news “Government orders deployment of additional SRTC buses in Chenab valley,” wherein it has been reported that the State Government is going to deploy additional SRTC buses in Chenab valley. Though it is a very good step to provide transport facilities to the people, mere deployment of additional buses is not sufficient.
As per my own knowledge and experience SRTC is a big den of corruption and maladministration. The bus operators running on the Jammu Poonch bus route don’t issue ticket to the passengers boarding the bus enroute to the destination. Most of the passengers even don’t know that they were traveling by the Government bus and nobody bothers to demand for the ticket. But they don’t issue ticket even on demand. There are a number of things which seem to have been provided to breed corruption. These are:
* No sign board inside the buses to indicate that it is Government bus and traveling without ticket is an offence.
* Non-availability of a complaint box in the bus
* Non-availability of a complaint book with the bus operators
* Non-availability of uniforms and name plate with the bus operators
* Non-functioning of inspection staff
In this way, there seems an atmosphere of corruption and maladministration leading to misappropriation of public money which needs to be checked. It is suggested that the task of ticket checking should be assigned to the traffic police. Besides, all of the prevailing deficiencies should be removed before any kind of expansion in the SRTC buses.
