MUMBAI, June 23: Actor Ranveer Singh, who has interesting films like ‘Lootera’ and ‘Ram Leela’ lined up for release, says an actor can survive in the industry only because of his versatility and acting abilities and not on persona.
Ranveer, 27, made his debut with ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ in 2010 where he played a wedding planner. Next year, he was seen in ‘Ladies vs Ricky Bahl’, where he duped girls.
“I am happy that I am able to make a mark. I want to continue doing good work. It is about delivering and being consistent and taking steps forward, showing versatility and variety in what you do,” Ranveer said in an interview here.
“I think that only one who is an all rounder, a good actor and delivers good performance can last. Gone are that days of surviving on persona, I think versatility and acting prowess contribute to the longevity in acting career in modern climate of Indian cinema,” he added.
Ranveer’s next releases are ‘Lootera’, a period romance drama opposite Sonakshi Sinha (releasing on July 5). Next in the pipeline is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much awaited ‘Ram Leela’, which is said to be an adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic love story Romeo and Juliet, set in violent times (releasing in November).
He will also be seen in ‘Gunday’, where he plays a thief alongwith Arjun Kapoor (releasing in February 2014).
Though Ranveer is just two films old, but he has a strong fan following.
“I made a strong start and I knew that was important. I knew I would not get chances as I am not from the industry. I knew I had to make an impression. It was like do or die situation. I had to make a good first impression and I managed to do it,” he said.
Ranveer thinks a lot of good work is coming his way because of the potential that people saw in him from his first film.
The actor became the talk of the town not only for his work but also for his alleged link-ups with co-stars Anushka Sharma, Sonakshi Sinha and Deepika Padukone.
“I don’t say anything… People say about it. I am generous with my compliments (on females). I tend to see the beauty in everyone. I don’t hold back in expressing my feelings.
“I think that’s why these traits of me being tagged as flirt are talked about, which is fine. It is not my own doing, I don’t try to perpetrate it,” Ranveer said.
But he has problems with tags of all kinds.
“I have problem with tags, be it flirt or casanova. When you tag somebody, you are defining and limiting those people. Whoever you are assigning… Each person is complex and infinite. By tagging it is like putting them in a box. I don’t think it is right,” he added. (PTI)
