Accidents on the increase

Sir,
Some years back, it was believed that the accidents are on the increase due to bad state of roads especially the national highways  and other roads connecting  the main road.
During the period 2002-03, when four laning of  National Highway was undertaken during the regime of the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, it was believed that there would be decrease in the accidents but nothing like that happened.
Although there was considerable reduction in accident during last few years, the situation is assuming horrible proportion due to increase in vehicles.
Any body riding the motor cycle or the scooter or plying the car, does not adhere to the rules and regulations of the Transport Department. The driver does not care for the vehicle coming from the opposite side thereby causing accident. Some vehicles including the buses when over take the other vehicle cause accidents resulting in  loss of precious lives.
Despite directions issued by the Ministry of Road and Communication for Safety, no body adheres to them. If we take the numbers alone in 2012, a total of 2214 took place only on the National Highway wherein 498 lost their lives.  In 2013, a total of 2161 took place  wherein 432 lost their life.
There is urgent need to a redress this issue of public importance by both people and Government.
Yours etc…
