Accession Day

Sir,
This refers to the well researched article ‘Why not Celebrate Accession Day Officially ‘ by KB Jandial. The author has very lucidly brought out the history of accession of our State with India. He has strengthened his assertion of finality of the accession by quoting the illustrious authorities from Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan to Campbell. He has aptly pointed out that the authority to take a decision regarding Accession was with the Maharaja and Maharaja alone and once this decision had been taken by the competent authority the same has assumed finality. It has further been rightly stated that the Instrument of Accession had no conditionality attached to it per se and the suggestion of the Governor General to ascertain the wishes of the people in his covering letter bears no sanctity. Still the wishes of the people had also been ascertained through the popular political party National Conference and later on through the endorsement of the same by the Constituent Assembly. UN resolutions have also lost their relevance once Pakistan decided to ignore its condition of withdrawing its forces from the State. This fact was also acknowledged by Gen Musharraf during his visit to India. The article should go a long way to remove the misconceptions of some of our leaders who speak of partial accession and some irrelevant proposition for Hong Kong model. Government of India and the State govt have unfortunately ignored to celebrate the day of Accession. In Maharashtra people of Aurangabad and adjoining districts who formed a part of Hyderabad celebrate the day when they acceded to India on 24th November every year apart from celebrating Independence and Republic Days. The authorities should listen to the suggestion of the author and take necessary steps to celebrate the Red Letter Day when it was decided to merge with a secular and progressive country.
