*Files chargesheet against former BDO Kupwara

JAMMU, Apr 20: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has secured the conviction of five former store keepers of Food and Supplies Department in a decades-old misappropriation case of Pahalgam, while a charge-sheet has also been presented against a former Block Development Officer (BDO) of Kupwara and four others in another embezzlement case.
The Special Judge Anti-Corruption Court Anantnag convicted five accused, identified as Abdul Khaliq Shah of Ashmuqam, Ghulam Nabi Mir of Ashmuqam, Mohammad Shafi Rather of Devaroo, Gh Hassan Hajam, of Kathsoo, and Muzaffar Ahmad Bichoo of Malaknag, Anantnag, who were posted as store keepers in Food Supplies Sale Centres of Pahalgam circle, for misappropriation of food grains and empty bags during the period from April 1989 to September 1989.
The case was registered in Police Station Vigilance Organisation Kashmir (now ACB) in 1990 following a complaint by the Food and Supplies Department, alleging embezzlement amounting to Rs 364235.84.
After investigation, a charge-sheet was filed in 2003.
The Court, after examining evidence, convicted all the accused under relevant provisions of the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act and RPC, and listed the case for arguments on quantum of punishment on April 24.
In another case, ACB has filed a charge-sheet against a former BDO Kupwara, two officials and two private persons for alleged misappropriation of Government funds.
The case originated from a complaint received in July 2021, alleging embezzlement in execution of developmental works in Block Kupwara.
Investigation revealed that the accused, in connivance with private beneficiaries, fraudulently generated fund transfer orders and diverted money into unauthorized accounts.
The probe also found instances of double payments, fake works and misuse of job cards, causing a loss of Rs 4, 86, 170 to the Government exchequer.
The charge-sheet has been presented before the competent court for judicial determination.
