ABVP calls off strike as JU agrees demands on hostel fee

JAMMU, May 10: The protesting ABVP students today called off their fast unto death after the committee constituted to look into their demands regarding the hike in the hostel fee reached to an agreement.
The agreement was reached out after several rounds of discussions with between the protesting students and the committee which gave its recommendations.
According to the recommendations, the hike in the room rent and hostel infrastructure development funds will be deferred by academic year 2014-2015 while the other fees will be charged w.e.f. 2013-14, as per the notification issued in February 2013. The committee further recommended to reduce the Security fee from Rs 2000/- to Rs 800/-. As per the recommendations the students will now have to pay Rs 2980/- per annum and    security fee for the academic session 2013-14. For the next academic session they will have to pay Rs 3480/ and security fee.
It was also agreed upon that the university may hike the hostel fee @ 15 percent annually from the session 2015-16 onwards. It was also recommended that a committee may be constituted to inquire into the allegations made by the students for discrepancies in hostel fee charged from the boarders of different hostels.
After the agreement, JU Registrar Prof Manoj Dhar offered juice to the students on hunger strike in presence of Prof Naresh Padha, Prof Pankaj K Srivastava, Dean Students Welfare, Prof Jasbir Singh, Provost Hostels, Jai Kumar Sharma, Special Secretary to VC, Dr Prakash Anthral and Dr Ab Rashid Manhas Assistant Dean.
Pertinent to mention here that ABVP activists were on fast unto death since last Wednesday for roll back in hostel fee hike.
