Sir,
This refers to the editorial ‘Abolition of interview’ (DE, Oct 13, 2015). The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s suggestion on the eve of last Independence Day that the practice of interviewing candidates for the junior level posts should be abolished on the plea that sometimes the meritorious candidates are rejected in the interview, need to be taken in the right perspective. Often, the candidates competing for different posts and failing to get selected complain of being discriminated at the time of interview by being awarded less marks than they deserved. Many a time, it so happens that a candidate who scores higher marks in the academic examinations or in the written test is not selected whereas those having less marks get selected by being awarded more marks in the interview. There is no doubt that abolishing the system of interview for the non technical and non-gazetted posts will ensure more transparent and objective selections and help in curbing corruption, nepotism and favouritism at the time of selection of candidates to various posts. It would also be in the interest of the candidates if this system is adopted in our State and the posts of non gazetted cadre are filled in the various departments of our State under the process of fast track recruitment by abolishing interviews. It will also lead to the fast completion of the process of selection. The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS, PMO, Personnel, Public, Grievances, Atomic Energy and Space Dr Jitendra Singh has already written to the State Governments to implement this revolutionary decision of abolishing the interview system for the junior level posts to curb corruption and substantially ease the problems of the poor and resourceless persons. Therefore, the State Government ought to explore the option of doing away with interview for the junior level posts and identify such posts where interviews can be abolished, of course, in consultation with the Recruitment Agencies/Bodies such as PSC and SSRB ensuring transparent and objective recruitment for fast completion of the recruitment process.
Yours etc…..
