A story of every village

Neha Sharma
‘‘Beauty is no quality in places themselves. It exist merely in the mind which contemplates them.’’ This quote is the best way to tell how beautiful villages are.
From school days till now, in vacation,  I’ visit a village named Chareer  in Teh. Akhnoor  for spending few days. Going away from crowd of Jammu city into the peaceful environment is something which I enjoy. Whatever be the place, let it be a metro city having eye catching malls, highly facilitated multiplexes or whatever but at the end of the day soothing environment of a village is the one thing which we people living in citieslove.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               In  schools,  we  were taught that villages are lifeline of a nation/state .Villages play a very significant role in the development of their nation/state. But now the question of their development arises, how far they are provided with what they need?
In childhood, going to a village was all fun for me but  now being grown up or I can say being a responsible citizen I have started analyzing things, realized that we people living in cities having double storey houses, AC rooms,  theatres,  delicious foods in restaurants, when visit a village, have lots of fun and come back to our normal lives. But do we ever thin for a while that the place which gives us peace- are its residents  getting what they require i.e. the basic necessities of life?
When we people even get a small finger cut we immediately approach a doctor for ointment but those living in villages suffer more severe pain the reason being there is no doctor, and if by chance there is a doctor, then there is no means  of transportation and if there is a transportation the roads will be in a  bad condition. So the first thing which I think this village requires is a  road.
Last time when I visited the village, to my surprise I saw a bulb lighting there. First I thought that it might be running on  solar energy but it was unbelievable for me that it was electricity in the village. I know it sounds funny but it is true that the village I visit,  got electricity on 13th, January 2012. It was the great reason of happiness for everyone.
But then I noticed that every house in the village got electric connection. They can now lit their bulbs and run other electronic items but people have no switches to switch them  off or on.   The people who were facing darkness since past years are now getting brightness of a bulb in the day time. I cannot blame them for this irresponsible behavior because they are not so aware of saving  electricity. It is  the work of electricity department to aware them of  the usage of electricity. When I asked one of the residents,  why there are no switch boards and how will you switch off the lights in the morning? “there is no such need to switch them off.  I’ll remove the bulb from the holder and the bulb will be switched off “, Ms. Rachna (20 yrs ) said. An example of unawareness.
The only thing that needs to be done is ‘awareness’ so that every single person gets  complete benefit without any consequences. There are many other facilities I would rather call them necessities that the people of  village require. Like that of road, medicine,  fepartmental stores etc. and existence of all these facilities can make the life of people residing here smooth and comfortable.
There is a primary school in the village.  But, it has no quality of calling it as a school. I asked Ali, a student of that school, – Does he daily go to school or not? “I go when I feel like going and teachers say nothing, they don’t even scold me”. I am not complaining about teachers but just sharing something that can help, a teacher cannot force a student but he/she can aware the student that why is it necessary to get educated. And it is very easy to flatter primary school students because they are very innocent at heart, like we used to get flattered by our parents, “If you promise to go to school you’ll get a chocolate.” This greed of chocolate made our minds to enter the school gate and now that greed is showing its benefit  in the form of my pen. Only awareness and future of the little kids of the village will be bright.
The other necessity  which I noticed is required in the village is of a medical store. If any person requires medical help then for an unwell person it is not possible to cover a distance of 20kms. ( which is the approximate distance of a medical store in another village from this particular village). I asked an old woman who lives in this village about the medical requirements. “I have two sons is one  elder one in Jammu and younger one is here. Both of them provide me every medicine but in emergency it creates panic and then I have to disturb both of them. If someday there will be a medical store here  then I can help myself out without disturbing anyone.” Vaishno Devi (78yrs)said
Next thing which this village requires is a departmental store. I am not saying that it is the work of Government alone, any common man living in this village can open it. And to open it existence of a road is a necessity. You will think why I am again writing about road: because there exist no road here and if road is provided then automatically  all the above mentioned necessities will make their way.
There is no doubt that our State Government is trying to provide every village what it requires. Thanks to panchayat system and MGNREGA. They are providing funds to the panches and sarpanches for helping people in village but then lack of awareness and rise in corruption is making common man suffer.
It is not a condition of one village but condition which every village has, and a story that every village tells. Not alone the Government can change the picture but the cooperation of local people and we educated youth can help it out. And if every village of our state is given consideration then it is for sure than these beautiful places will be easily reachable, and there will be lots more picnic spots and soothing places to enjoy. And all this will enhance the beauty of our State.
