JAMMU, Apr 15: Minister for Planning and Development Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today stressed the need for launching a massive drive to create awareness among the consumers about their rights and the safeguards available to them under J&K Consumers Act.
Speaking at a function held at Jammu Group of Educational Institutions at Purkhoo, under the aegis of Consumer Protection Organization (J&K), the Minister said that this was imperative for protection of consumer interests and foiling the attempts of exploiters, black marketers, profiteers and those indulging in unfair trade practices.
“The laws under the Act have gone a long way in mitigating genuine complaints of the consumers and helped in healthy trade practices to a large extent’, he maintained while emphasizing that the initiative will not succeed unless the people of the State especially those living in remote and far off areas are not fully acquainted about their rights.
The Minister appreciated the steps initiated by the Consumer Protection Organization for its relentless efforts in protecting the interests of consumers from unscrupulous elements and said the movement has to be taken in the length and breadth of the state. He exuded confidence that the awareness programmes will be helpful to consumers for getting an opportunity to know their legal and other rights in this regard.
He said educational institutions can play a useful role in disseminating the objectives of the Act through various modes of communication. He called for arranging similar consumer awareness camps at all levels by involving of educational institutions actively
Director Consumer Affairs &Public Distribution Department G S Chib also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the initiatives taken by the department in streamlining the functioning of the department with special focus on safeguarding the rights of consumers.
