RAMBAN, Apr 21: The traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained suspended for over 14 hours after landslides in Mehar area of Ramban sector last night.
Official sources said that during shooting stones at around 10.15 pm last night at Mehar, a trailer ( Tralla) coming from Srinagar to Jammu was trapped. The driver and helper escaped unhurt and fled from the spot. Thereafter, shooting stones and the spree of falling of boulders commenced and the highway was blocked. The vehicle was also extensively damaged.
Due to blockade at Mehar sliding zone, a large number of vehicles were stranded on both the sides. The restoration work was started in the morning. At first, the damaged empty trailer was dragged out and then the debris were removed. The highway was restored at around 12.30 pm today.
14 SRTC buses which were carrying Kashmiris from Quarantine Centre Lakhanpur in Kathua to Kashmir also remained stranded for hours. These buses were cleared at first, followed by the trucks loaded with essential supplies to Kashmir. All the stranded vehicles were cleared late this evening, a Traffic Police official said.
