SRINAGAR, Apr 21: Police today booked another prominent journalist, Gowher Geelani, “for unlawful activities” through his posts and writings on social media platform.
A statement issued by police said: “”Cyber Police Station Kashmir Zone, Srinagar has received information through reliable sources that an individual namely Gowher Geelani is indulging in unlawful activities through his posts and writings on social media platform which are prejudicial to the national integrity, sovereignty and security of India.”
“The unlawful activities include glorifying terrorism in Kashmir valley, causing disaffection against the country and causing fear or alarm in the minds of public that may lead to commission of offences against public tranquility and the security of State,” the statement said.
The statement further said that several complaints have also been received against the said individual for threatening and intimidation. A case (FIR No. 11/2020) under the relevant Sections of law has been registered at Cyber Police Station Kashmir and investigation initiated.
Geelani is a freelance journalist and writer. Last year in September, he was barred from flying to Germany.
Earlier, police booked two journalists on charges of “anti-national posts” on social media and regarding a “fake news” published in a leading national newspaper.
Police said they booked a Facebook user Masrat Zehra for frequently uploading anti-national posts with the criminal intention. “She was booked for her posts on social media platforms and not for her journalism”, he said. She is a freelance photojournalist.
Another journalist working with the Hindu newspaper, Pirzada Ashiq was summoned for publicising “fake news” in the newspaper on a gun battle in which two militants were killed last week. “The details reflected in the news item were found factually incorrect and the said news could cause fear or alarm in the minds of public. The said news was published without seeking confirmation from the District authorities”, he said.
