Sir,
Health is an important index of human development and progress of a nation. Advanced medical technology has brought a radical change in every aspect of health sector. However, this medical technology is increasingly coming under question regarding its availability to common man.
With the onset of economic liberalisation, State has started showing signs of withdrawal from health sector which is an important social sector. This has encouraged private players to step in. These market forces work on the principle of inclusion and exclusion. Only those consumers who can afford to pay for costly medical technology can have access to it. Middle class and weaker sections of society are outrightly excluded. This has deprived comman man from availing of the health facility.
If the Govt contineus with the policy of disinvestment in health sector, the number of sick people will swell up and morbidity rate will increase to such a phenomenal proportion that it will be unmanageable to deal with it in future.
It becomes unavoidable on the part of Government to restrict the policy of disinvestment in this important social sector, keeping in view growing need of common people. Govt can widen its resource base by rationalising tax structure and invest more and more in health sector to free common man from the clutches of market forces. N.G.O.’s and other civil society organisation can play a pivotal role in helping the Govt. to better this social cause.
Yours etc…
