JAMMU, Feb 5: A couple hailing from Uttar Pradesh allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance in a room of a guest-house in holy town of Katra.
The couple identified as Deepa, daughter of Raj Kumar and Kushan, son of Swami Sharan, both residents of Meenakshi Tabez, district Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh had checked in the guest house and after paying obeisance at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, they returned to the guest house on January 31, a senior police official said.
From January 31, the couple was putting up in the guest house, he said, adding that the guest house staff when got no response from the visitors this morning, they informed the police.
On getting information, police party led by SP Katra Mohan Lal rushed to the spot and broke the door and found them lying unconscious.
The duo were shifted to Katra hospital, where doctors declared girl as brought dead, while the youth died during treatment, he added.
A bag of clothes, mobile, cold drink bottles and an insecticide bottle having aluminium phosphate as ingredient were recovered from the room, he said.
“After scrutinizing the mobile contacts, we have informed their families about the matter”, he said, adding that during preliminary investigations, it came to fore that the deceased couple was missing from their native place since January 27.
“Their families were closely related to each other and are not in favour of their marriage, which might be the reason behind the suicide but nothing can be said till completion of investigations,” police official added.
A case under Section 174 CrPC has been registered at Katra Police Station and investigations started.
