JAMMU, Oct 10: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Kirpal Chand seeking to know the preparedness of the State to deal with disasters like earthquakes, Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and Justice Sanjay Kumar Gupta today directed the State to ensure that periodical disaster management drills are conducted to keep alert all the stakeholders.
“In the writ petition it has been contended that State of Jammu and Kashmir is earthquake prone as such sufficient directions should be issued to the State Government to get prepared to face eventualities consequent to natural calamities like earthquake, floods etc”, the DB observed, adding “response has been filed by Ehsan Mirza, Deputy AG enclosing copy of various management plans and policies which govern the implementation of disaster management in the case of natural calamities like earthquake, flood etc”.
“Ehsan Mirza points out that the State is having a detailed plan for management of disaster and this protocol is being effectively managed. However, a lapse on the part of any official is also being seriously looked into by the Government. In this view of the report filed and taking note of the steps taken by the Government to address this issue we direct the Government to ensure that periodical disaster management drills are conducted so that all the stake holders are kept alert to face any type of natural disaster”, the DB said.
