DyCM writes to CM seeking holiday on Maharaja’s B’day

JAMMU, Sept 21: Deputy Chief Minister and veteran BJP leader Dr Nirmal Singh has written an official letter to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti seeking declaration of September 23 as State holiday to mark Birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh.
In the letter, Dr Singh has called upon the Chief Minister to direct the General Administration Department (GAD) to issue formal orders for declaration of holiday on Maharaja’s Birthday in view of J&K’s multi-religious, multi-lingual and multi ethnic rich history and heritage, where prominent personalities from all regions, religions and ethnicities have contributed immensely towards its progress, prosperity and development.
“One such prominent personality of our State, formerly the princely State of Jammu and Kashmir, was Maharaja Hari Singh Ji, who was born on September 23, 1895,’’ Dr Singh pointed out and sought declaration of holiday on September 23 keeping in view great contributions of the Maharaja like introduction of laws for abolition of Child Marriage, permitting Scheduled Castes in temple for worship and preventing Britishers from settling and making the State their colony.
Dr Singh pointed out that it was Maharaja Hari Singh, who made the primary education compulsory in the State and laid foundation of development and co-existence.
