JAMMU, May 24: Drug and Food Control Organization (DFCO), today destroyed about 21 quintal of mangoes ripened with Calcium Carbide, the use of which is prohibited for ripening under the provisions of Food Standards & Safety Act.
According to a spokesman of DFCO, designated officer of Jammu Municipality area, Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, along with a team of Food Safety officers today conducted an extensive inspection of Food Business Operators dealing with fresh fruits.
He said that during the drive, a consignment of mangoes weighing 20 quintals contained in 176 boxes of 12 kg each, were detected and found having been ripened with Calcium Carbide. He said, as no person came forward to claim the ownership of the consignment of mangoes, the team destroyed the same in the presence of president of the Fruit Sellers’ Union, Rajesh Gupta.
