Clashes in Nowhatta

Srinagar, Nov 1: The shutdown paralyzed life in Kashmir for 116th day today during which protests and clashes erupted at Nowhatta in Old City and Rohmoo village of Pulwama district.
Security forces were deployed in five police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Rainawari and Khanyar – since early morning to prevent any clash. There was, however, no restriction on civilian movement in these areas.
In Civil Line and uptown areas of the Srinagar, the routine movement of private transport and pedestrians was once again seen since early morning but shops, commercial establishments and educational institutes were closed.
Police and CRPF were deployed for the security of street vendors at Lal Chowk and other places to prevent attacks from masked men. Reports of stone-pelting were received from Batamaloo area today.
The shops, however, opened during the evening in Lal Chowk and other areas of Srinagar and there was huge rush of shoppers. Traffic jams were also reported from several areas.
In the evening, clashes erupted at Nowhatta area of Old City between protesters and security forces against arrests of two local youth. Police fired teargas to foil the protests.
At Rohmoo village of Pulwama district, massive protests were staged by locals against yesterday’s  security forces’ action in which 25 persons including several women were injured. The locals staged protests against security forces.
A police spokesman said: “The overall situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control today.  During the day, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the Valley till filing of this report.  In  the day greater vehicular traffic was observed on the city roads as also in the main towns of the Valley. A huge number of vendors were seen on the roads, lanes and by lanes doing their normal business in the city as well in the main towns of the Valley.
“The deployment of police and security forces continued on the vulnerable points across the city as well as on the roads lanes and by lanes in main towns across Kashmir.”
A police officer said that miscreants tonight set ablaze office cum residence of Deputy Chief Education Officer (CEO) Shopian tonight. It may be mentioned here that 28 schools were torched during last few months in Kashmir by miscreants.
