Orthopaedics Deptt organizes basic Ilizarov course

JAMMU, Aug 7: Department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu in collaboration with Jammu Trauma Society organized a basic Ilizarov course in Jammu for the first time.
Ilizarov is a Russian technique used by orthopaedic surgeons in various kinds of surgeries. Using this technique, bone fracture is fixed using wires and rings. This technique is used for treating patients who have infection in the bones of their legs with fractures and also for lengthening of bones of the leg.
More than 60 orthopedic surgeons from various hospitals of Jammu province and North India participated in the programme.
DR Anil Gupta, the course organizer, informed the delegates that the goal of organizing the course was to educate orthopedic surgeons of the region about the latest techniques in Ilizarov and Limb saving systems.
Prof PN Gupta from GMC Chandigarh, Prof Vikas Gupta from Safdarjung Hospital and Medical College, Delhi, Prof Harpal Singh from DMC Ludhiana and Dr Tarandeep delivered lectures during the course.
During the course, the delegates were given hands on training in various Ilizarov and LRS techniques. The delegates also learned about use of Limb reconstruction saving systems.
Dr Sanjeev Gupta from GMC Jammu informed that patients do not have to go outside the State for getting orthopaedic treatment as all surgeries are being done at Jammu.
DR Abdul Ghani informed that advanced version of the course will be held next year. Earlier, he also presented welcome address.
