LEH, September 20 : The Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh Rigzin Spalbar today inaugurated the annual exhibition/competition of vegetables, fruits and flowers at Indoor Stadium Hall Leh. Aiming to encourage and educate the farmers of Leh Distt, the exhibition was jointly organized by Agriculture and Horticulture Departments.
After inaugurating the exhibition, CEC Rigzin Spalbar accompanied by EC Agriculture Sonam Dorjey, MLC Leh Norboo Gyaltson and ADC Tsering Morup inspected the stalls of vegetable, fruit and flowers and made queries about the displayed items. Chief Agriculture Officer Mohd. Hassan gave a detail on the aim and objectives of conducting this exhibition.
Addressing the exhibition, Rigzin Spalbar said that organizing this kind of annual exhibition provide good platform to the farmers to showcase their hard work and success and stressed upon the farmers to cultivate different kinds of vegetables and fruits not only for exhibition purpose but for income generation.
Terming agriculture the only sustainable method for Ladakh region, Spalbar made a mention that Council is already in a process to shift its focus from infrastructure to agriculture and its allied sectors to direct Ladakh region towards sustainability and prosperity. He also disclosed that with the economic growth and possible business opportunities in Leh region, LAHDC, is planning to make local partnership mandatory in every business venture.
Likewise, Spalbar also urged upon the farmers of Ladakh to prove their farming potential and capability in practical terms and LAHDC and the allied departments are more than willing to help them in every possible way to enhance the productivity of agricultural produces.
Later, in the evening EC Agriculture Sonam Dorjey distributed the prizes among the winners in different categories of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Addressing the gathering, EC made a mention of the cold storages coming up at Nubra and Khaltsi worth Rs.3 cr each and one at Leh worth Rs.6 cr of which Rs. 3 cr have already been sanctioned and released and expressed hope that by next year it will get functional. He also informed that a processing unit worth Rs.1 cr will also be established at Nimoo.
