SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, May 21: On the 25th death anniversary of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, Pradesh Congress Committee organized blood donation camps at Srinagar, Jammu and other places and paid floral tributes to the popular Congress leader.
The camp in Srinagar PCC office was inaugurated by the State Congress chief, GA Mir. Paying rich tributes to former Prime Minister, the PCC chief lauded the services rendered by Late Rajiv Gandhi for the integrity and honour of the nation. He said assassination of Rajiv Gandhi was a great loss to the Nation and created vacuum in the Indian politics which can never be filled, he said.
Describing Rajiv Gandhi an apostle of peace and a symbol of development, PCC chief said that being a visionary Rajiv Gandhi played pivotal role in strengthening the Nation, his five year term as Prime Minister of the country brought the country at par with fast developing countries of the world.
Speaking on the occasion former PCC president, Peerzada Mohd Syed said that Rajiv Gandhi, in order to strengthen the people from grass root level, introduced Panchayati Raj System in the country, thereby, ensured people’s participation in the developmental process, which proved a turning point in the overall development of the Country and people.
On this occasion 62 Congress activists donated blood. Prominent among those present on the occasion included Ghulam Nabi Monga-MLC, MLA Haji Abdul Rashid Dar, Amreen Badre, Bashir Ahmad Magrey, Farooq Andrabi, Raman Matoo, Shoiab Nabi Lone, Nazir Ahmad Khan, SS Channi, Shameema Iqbal, Irfan Naqib, Abid Kashmiri, Mohd Sultan, Jawhira and Imtiyaz Ahmad Khan.
In Jammu also, the day was observed as `Balidan Divas’ by the Congress activists. A blood donation camp was organised at Kaluchak where 86 Congress activists and some leaders donated blood.
Former Ministers and senior Congress leaders viz. Sham Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla, Mula Ram, Yogesh Sawhney, Dy Chairman Legislative Council Jehangir Hussain Mir, Ravinder Sharma, Kanta Bhan, Vikram Malhotra, Anil Chopra and several others paid rich tributes to the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi during `Shrandhanjali Samaroh.’
Sham Lal described Rajiv Gandhi as great statesman and a visionary leader and recalled his contributions for the party and the country. Mula Ram, Raman Bhalla and Jahangir Mir also addressed the gathering.
Prominent among others present on the occasion included Rajneesh Sharma, Manmohan Singh, Ch Shah Mohd, Namrata Sharma, Indu Pawar, Arun Singh, Ashok Gupta, G L Chalotra, Shiv dev Singh, Kuldeep Verma, Y B Sharma, B S Sambyal, Shashi Sharma, Krishan Bhagat, Neeraj Gupta, Jai Singh, Pankaj Dogra, Nadeem Niaz, Hari Singh Chib, Gurdarshan Singh and Anuradha Andotra.
Another similar function was organised at Bishnah under the leadership of senior Congress leader, Mohinder Kumar Bhardwaj (advocate). A large number of Congress activists paid their tributes to Late Rajiv Gandhi. M K Bhardwaj spoke on the contributions of Late Gandhi and recalled his statesmanship qualities. On this occasion, a `Chhabeel’ was also arranged for the public. Prominent among others present included Kirpal Singh, Rattan Lal, Darshan Sharma, Ajay Bhagat, Kuldeep Kumar, Rajesh Sharma, Mahesh Kumar and Nanak Chand.
At Udhampur, the Congress workers under the leadership of Sumeet Magotra organised ‘run for peace’ to mark the day. The rally commenced from DC office and after passing through various markets culminated near SBI. Several local Congress leaders participated in the programme. Several such programmes were held across the State to mark the day.
