NEW DELHI : In the backdrop of the recent happenings in Arunachal Pradesh where the Congress has charged state Governor J P Rajkhowa with violating Constitutional norms to topple a democratically elected government in the state, President Pranab Mukheree today said, ”It is incumbent on us all who hold constitutional positions to maintain the sanctity of the Constitution.”
In his opening address at the 47th Conference of Governors at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President, referring to the recent terrorist attacks including the attack at the Pathankot air base, stressed the need to upgrade defence capabilities and called for continuing efforts at resolving all outstanding international issues through peaceful dialogue and negotiations.
The conference at the Rashtrapati Bhavan is being attended by 23 Governors and Lt Governors of the states and Union Territories.
The President said,”Our nation has grown from strength to strength since independence. It is primarily due to our steadfast adherence to the principles enshrined in our Constitution. It is an enduring document that reflects our aspirations and the avenues to achieve them, in an inclusive manner.
It is incumbent on us all who hold constitutional positions to maintain the sanctity of this sacred text.” Dignitaries participating in the inaugural session of the conference included Vice-President M Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Minister of State (I/C) of Development of North Eastern Region and Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog.
Referring to the recent terrorist attacks, the President said,” States having international borders were affected by terrorist attacks that had clear external linkages. Volatile external security environment makes it incumbent on us to upgrade our defence capabilities. At the same time, we have to continue our efforts at resolving all outstanding international issues through peaceful dialogue and negotiations.” (AGENCIES)
