JU organizes lecture on ‘Urdu Ghazal’

JAMMU, Oct 6: The Department of Urdu, University of Jammu today organized an extension lecture on the topic “Urdu Ghazal in present Century”, by Prof  Shehpar Rasool, Head of the Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.
Prof  Qudose Javeed   former HoD Urdu, presided over the function.
While delivering the lecture,  Prof  Shehpar Rasool traced the history of Urdu Ghazal and  informed that Ghazal came to Urdu from Persian. Quli Qutab Shah was the 1st Urdu Ghazal writer in the sub-continent while  Ghalib, Mir Taki Mir, Zouk, Souda were the towering poets  who played a vital role in the development of Urdu Ghazal initially.
Atish, Hasrat, Yas Yaganana, Alama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Firaq Gorkpuri were the poets who took Urdu Ghazal to its heights, he added.  He said that Urdu Ghazal took a new turn when progressive writers movement started, its theme changed and also its techniques changed.
Earlier, Prof  Shohab Inayat Malik, HoD Urdu,  presented a brief profile of Prof  Shehpar Rasool and  described him a towering poet of sub-continent. Prof Sukhchain Singh presented a vote of thanks while Dr  Mohd Reyaz Ahmed, Associate Professor conducted the proceeding of the program. The program was attended by students, scholars and faculty members and members of the civil society.
