srinagar, Sept 2: Dozens of villagers in Wanduna South Kashmir’s Shopian district today protested against water scarcity and blocked Banihal-Baramulla rail service for two hours.
The protesters this morning staged a protest against Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department for failing to provide drinking water to the Wanduna villagers from last two months.
The agitated villagers accused the concerned Junior Engineer of “deliberately” hampering water supply to the village and also heckled him during the protest.
The protesters occupied the Baramulla-Banihal railway track which passes through the area and halted train service for about two hours leading to inconvenience to hundreds of passengers.
Sensing trouble, senior police officials along with a local People’s Democratic Party leader Athar Muzaffar rushed to the spot and pacified protesters on the directions of Deputy Commissioner.
The protesters, after getting assurance, ended their protest and dispersed peacefully.
