Modi returns home after tour of Central Asian nations, Russia

NEW DELHI:Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to the national Capital early this morning after concluding his tour of five Central Asian nations and Russia during which he tried to reinvigorate India’s ties with the countries of the region, especially in the areas of energy, defence and security. This was the first visit of the Prime Minister to the Central Asian region and also to Russia.
In Central Asia, Mr Modi visited Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, while he participated in the BRICS and SCO summits during his visit of Ufa, Russia. At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, India was included in the organisation in which it was so far having an observer status.
On the margins of the SCO and Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Summit, he held bilateral meetings with leaders of the member countries, the highlight of which was his meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after which the two leaders came out with a joint statement charting out a plan for starting the stalled peace process between the two countries. During his visit, Mr Modi concluded several agreements with the countries of the region in these areas and others like education, culture and IT. (AGENCIES)
