Srinagar, July 8: A medicos’ body in Kashmir said that the private practice by doctors is the “root cause” of deterioration of tertiary care hospitals.
Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) president, Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan, in a statement said that the “menace of private practice has eaten away our premier institutions and has buried the very purpose of research and teaching in these centres”.
“These referral hospitals have been created to set new and advanced standards of patient care and find new cures for diseases. Patient care and medical education are worst hit and quality research which is critical for teaching hospitals is a distant dream because of the bug of private practice,” he said, adding: “It is round the clock presence of faculty in tertiary care hospitals that ensures quality and efficient patient care.”
“Be it GB Pant mess or stark untidiness inside Lal Ded Maternity Hospital, private practice is responsible. It was shocking to learn that during previous regime Health Department in connivance with some senior doctors has approached Supreme Court to lift the ban on private practice which was imposed by State High Court in Public Interest Litigation on November 18, 2011,” the DAK president said.
He said it is unfortunate that some elements for their personal gains are justifying private practice and misleading people.
The majority of doctors working in teaching hospitals are for blanket ban of private practice as this dual practice is uncomfortable for them as well as patients, he claimed. “But as of now the private practice mafia is so strong that it seems that Government has virtually surrendered before them,” Hassan added.
