JAMMU, May 1: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Sukhnandan Kumar today visited various areas of Jourian and Khour to inspect the irrigation facilities and ongoing renovation and desilting works on the canal and its distributaries.
MLA Akhnoor, Rajeev Sharma, MLA Khour, Dr Krishan Lal and senior officers of Irrigation and Flood Control Department also accompanied the Minister during his visit.
While expressing satisfaction over the progress of desilting works, the Minister directed the executive agency to speed up the pace and complete the ongoing works of all major and minor distributaries and clear the canals within two days.
The Minister during his visit also met the local people and took stock of their problems and directed the concerned officers to ensure timely redressal of their problems.
While interacting with the people, the Minister appealed them to desist from dumping of garbage into the canals and directed the department to take action against those who are involved in such acts . He requested the locals to cooperate with the Government and the departmental functionaries in keeping the canals clean .
Reiterating the commitment of the Government to provide better irrigation facilities to the people, the minister exhorted upon the officers to redouble their efforts and work for the betterment of the people and said that any laxity in this regard would not be tolerated.
The minister also directed the I&FC authorities for immediately take up restoration works to plug the breeches on the bunds along River Chenab.
