JAMMU, June 1: Questioning the rationale behind proposed implementation of prepaid electricity meters in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) today served a one-week ultimatum to the Government and the concerned authorities to address public apprehensions on the issue.
Addressing a press conference, here today, YRS also threatened to launch a mass agitation against the proposed prepaid meter system if the Government does not come clear on the issue.
The press conference was jointly addressed by YRS President Mandeep Singh Rimpy, former President Vikram Singh Vicky, Founder Members Ranjeet Singh, Rajesh Singh and others.
They questioned the rationale behind introducing a prepaid system that could adversely affect daily wage earners, lower-income families, pensioners, small traders, and other sections of society who often face financial hardships and irregular incomes. Electricity is an essential service and any policy affecting lakhs of households must be implemented only after extensive public consultation and transparency, they added.
The YRS leaders further stated that at a time when the Government of India is encouraging citizens to adopt electric vehicles and move towards an electricity-driven future, creating uncertainty regarding access to electricity sends a contradictory message to the public. They asserted that citizens should have confidence in uninterrupted electricity supply rather than fear of disconnection due to prepaid balance issues.
The organization demanded that the Government must immediately clarify its position regarding the implementation of prepaid meters and make public all relevant details, studies, and consumer safeguards associated with the project.
Issuing a stern warning, the YRS leaders said that if the Government fails to respond within one week, the organization will mobilize the public across Jammu Kashmir and launch a peaceful but vigorous mass agitation against the proposed prepaid meter system.
YRS Core Committee members Balbir Singh, Shamsher Singh, Pushpinder Singh, Chief Spokesperson Vishal Singh, Statebody members Avtar Singh, Sumit Singh, Bhanu Pratap, Joginder Singh, Rakesh Singh, Sanju Singh, Uday Singh were also present in the press conference.
