KATHMANDU, May 29: Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel on Friday urged political parties, civil society and other stakeholders to contribute to developing a well-cultured and prosperous society as envisaged by the Constitution.
The Constituent Assembly declared Nepal as a federal democratic republic on 15 Jeshtha 2065 Bikram Samvat (May 28, 2008), formally abolishing the 240-year-old monarchy in the country.
Addressing a special ceremony at Tundikhel in Kathmandu on the occasion of Nepal’s 19th Republic Day, President Paudel emphasised that realising the objectives of good governance, development and prosperity is today’s national need.
This can be accomplished by strengthening an accountable and people-oriented service delivery, he said.
President Paudel was speaking on the occasion as Prime Minister Balendra Shah declined to address the ceremony at Tundikhel, ending a long-standing tradition of the elected prime minister delivering the keynote speech.
In his message, Paudel called for cooperation among all layers of government, the private sector and civil society to achieve social justice, economic prosperity and inclusive development as envisaged by the Constitution.
He urged all political parties, civil society, and other stakeholders to help develop a well-cultured, prosperous society through sustainable and judicious economic growth.
At the same time, he emphasised the need to uphold Nepal’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, national unity, national interests, and pride.
A contingent of the Nepali Army presented a guard of honour to Paudel while an Army helicopter displayed a banner reading ‘Republic Day 2083’ and showered flower petals from the air.
Vice-President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal and National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal were among those who were present during the event. (PTI)
