JAMMU, May 22: The members of the Jammu Municipal Workers Union today staged a protest against continuous discrimination by the higher authorities at JMC.
The union leaders highlighted significant disparities, pointing out that while the NGO system does not exist in Kashmir, it has been operational in the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) since 2005.

They strongly demanded the immediate abolition of the NGO system in Jammu.
In addition to this, the protesters raised several long-standing grievances, including the non-payment of salaries for workers hired through NGOs, the withholding of DPC orders for the health section, and the denial of uniform allowances, PF benefits and ESI cards.
While addressing the protesters, Rinku Gill, president Municipal Workers Union said, “As the department of Local Bodies is with newly elected Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, JMC employees hope that there shall be no discrimination with them and JMC will function like SMC, where there is no involvement of NGO for appointing casual employees as is being done in JMC.”
They raised other demands including settlement of pending cases of SRO-43 in JMC and conduct of DPC of all cadres of employees of JMC.
The protesters also demanded finalization of Recruitment Rules of JMC as the Re-Organization Order was issued in 2022 but Recruitment Rules of JMC were still not finalized.
They also demanded amendment in the rules and 50 per cent quota should be kept reserved for departmental promotion in all the cadres of JMC.
Implementation of old pension scheme in favour of all employees of JMC and 2.5 day salary to all field sanitation staff remained the other demands of the protesters.
The union warned that if their demands are not addressed swiftly, they will intensify their agitation and hold future protests directly outside the Commissioner’s office at Town Hall
