JAMMU, May 21: While commemorating the 35th anniversary of the martyrdom of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress organized a “Shradhanjli Samaroh” at Rajiv Bhawan, Shahidi Chowk, Jammu here today.
The function was presided over by PCC chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, while AICC general secretary and CLP Leader GA Mir, working president Raman Bhalla, former ministers- Mula Ram, Yogesh Sawhney, besides other senior leaders also attended.

Speaking on the occasion Tariq Hameed Karra recalled the contributions of Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister on various fronts especially, in the field of Science and Technology and Panchayati Raj system in the country, which are his biggest gifts to the nation. He lowered voting age from 21 years to 18 years to politically empower the youth.
Gandhi introduced the Computer and IT in the country as a result India is the leader in the world in the field of IT & Computer because of the timely lead taken by Rajiv Gandhi and it provided the biggest source of employment to the youth in the country and abroad. Karra said that Rajiv Gandhi gave the Panchayati Raj system to the country whereby women got 33% reservation besides SCs & STs at each tier of Panchayati Raj regime in the country.
He said Rajiv Gandhi was a visionary leader who had vision for the youth of the Country and prepared them for the challenges and opportunities of 21st Century. He is known for his peace initiatives in the country and the world and martyred because of his peace efforts in Sri Lanka.
CLP leader, GA Mir while paying tribute to the Rajiv Gandhi, recalled his great contributions to the nation during his short time. He said Rajiv Gandhi gave the direction to the India of 21st century and the youth of the country could face the challenges due to the orientation and opportunities offered by the visionary leadership of Rajiv Gandhi. Revolution in the field of telephones, computer & IT are all the gifts of Rajiv’s vision, he added.
He said Rajiv Gandhi brought 73rd & 74th amendment in the Constitution. The PR system got constitutional status in the country with regular elections and 33% representation to women and SC/STs at each level.
Raman Bhalla while paying tribute to Gandhi, recalled his visionary leadership and said he lowered the voting age from 21 years to 18 years for the youth.
Mula Ram recalled the great contributions Rajiv Gandhi towards youth, women, SCs and STs in the country. It was Rajiv Gandhi who empowered women, SC & ST in the political and democratic institutions in the country, he added.
Chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, senior leaders Yogesh Sawhney, Indu Pawar, Abdul Majid Wani, Ved Mahajan, Th. Balbir Singh, Rajnish Sharma, Th. Manmohan Singh, Kanta Bhan, Amolak Singh, Zahida Khan, TS Tony, Shashi Sharma, Satish Sharma, Amrit Bali, Vijay Sharma, Kapil Singh, Sanjeev Panda, Neeraj Gupta, Dwarka Choudhary, Rajveer Singh, Pravez Wani and others also attended the function.
