Gadkari defends PM Modi, targets Rahul Gandhi over Italy visit remarks

NAGPUR, May 20 : A fresh political row erupted between union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Italy, with both sides trading sharp remarks over diplomatic conduct and political rhetoric.
The controversy erupted after Prime Minister Modi, during his bilateral visit to Italy, reportedly gifted a packet of Melody chocolates to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in what was seen as a light-hearted reference to the viral social media term “Melodi” used for the two leaders.
Reacting to the gesture, Rahul Gandhi criticised the Prime Minister on social media platform X, terming it a “gimmick” and stating that “this is not leadership, this is a nautanki (drama).”
Responding sharply from Nagpur, Minister Gadkari defended the Prime Minister and accused Rahul Gandhi of displaying a “confused mindset.” Gadkari said criticism of an official diplomatic visit in such language was inappropriate and condemned what he described as disrespect towards constitutional positions in a democratic system.
“It is highly unfortunate and condemnable when leaders holding constitutional responsibility make such remarks regarding official international engagements,” Gadkari said, while questioning Gandhi’s approach to political discourse.
The latest exchange comes amid heightened political tensions following Rahul Gandhi’s recent address to Congress workers in Raebareli, where he allegedly targeted senior BJP leaders and the RSS.
Gandhi reportedly urged party workers to describe Prime Minister Modi, union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the RSS as “traitors,” triggering strong reactions from BJP leaders.
The BJP has since intensified its criticism of Gandhi’s remarks, with party leaders accusing him of using inflammatory language and drawing comparisons with the rhetoric employed by extremist and anti-national elements.
The war of words has further escalated the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Congress ahead of key political developments.
